Malang, East Java

Malang lang is a nice town with chilling temperature. It lies nine kilometers south of and becomes the most leisurely and attractive towns in Java. With leafy boulevards and a cooler climate, this city is a laid back destination, popular with many retirees in East Java.

Malang is the second largest city in East Java Province after Surabaya and becomes one of the most visited town during great holiday or weekends.

Dated back to 1222, Malang was capital city of Singhasari then transferred and modernized under the Dutch colony. The name of Malang is somehow uncertain. One of the theory said that the name Malang is derived from the words Malangkucecwara which means “God has destroyed the false and enforced the right”. The words was taken from an ancient term which mention a legendary temple called Malangkucecwara that supposedly located near Malang city. Meanwhile, the word Malangkucecwara was applied as the motto of the city of Malang today.

Since Malang is the second largest city after Surabaya, to get to this city is easy. The airlines that flying to Malang’s Abdul Rachman Saleh airport are: Merpati Nusantara from Denpasar (Bali) and on to Surabaya; Sriwijaya Air from Jakarta, and Mandala Airlines flies to Malang from Balikpapan, Jakarta and Surabaya. You can also reach Malang overland from Surabaya. As the center of tourism, Malang is mostly attracts tourists from the historical sites, culinary and amusement parks, as well as the agro-tourism and the shady town itself. Some highlights destinations that mostly visited in Malang are:

Bromo Mountain Mount Bromo is one of the most popular destinations in East Java, even in Indonesia. It is 2.5 hours from Malang. The Tenggerese inhabiting this area are believed to be direct descendants from the Majapahit aristocracy. They hold the annual Kesodo festival, known as Yadnya Kasada, to thank the Almightly for a good harvest and to appease the god of Mount Bromo.

Singasari Temple Visit the ancient Singosari temples surrounding Malang. These were built between 1222 and 1292AD and are mostly dedicated to the kings of the Singosari dynasty. Visit the candi or temple of Singosari, Candi Kidal, Candi Jago, and others, to feel the glance of glory at ancient times through those ancient buildings.

Goa Cina Beach Lies on the South coast of Sumbermanjing Wetan, Malang Regency, Goa Cina beach is offering the stunning beauty of bright blue sky and bright blue ocean into one canvas. Along Goa Cina beach, there will be shady trees in here and there, and the coral reef at the edge of the shore. It very enchanting and preferable for family recreation.

Toko Oen Toko Oen or Oen Bistro founded in 1910, this is one of the oldest restaurants in Indonesia with Dutch, Chinese & Indonesian cuisine. The main menu in this bistro is ice cream. The taste of old ice cream is still the same from the early begin. It vintage-ly delicious.

Balekambang Beach Balekambang beach is located in the village of Srigonco, District Bantur, South Malang. The distance is about 65 km from Malang city, and it can be reach for almost 3 hours by using private vehicle. This beach is lies for about 2 Km and there are three islands around the beach, which is Ismoyo Island with Luhur Amertha Jati temple above the island, Wisanggeni Island, and Anoman Island to the west.

Ngliyep Beach Ngliyep beach is located at the southern part of Malang Regency, where there is gigantic waves meet the coral reef. In addition, it has an island with a lush green tropical shore-forest giving more enchantment to the beach. This beach is provided with some facilities such as: stalls, souvenir shop, inns, etc.

Sendang Biru Sendang Biru is one of beach resorts in the southern part of Malang Regency, which free from tumulus waves of Indian Ocean due to the existence of wild life Sempu Island, which is about 300 meters offshore. To reach Sendang Biru, the visitor can use “Mikrolet” from Gadang – Turen – Sendang Biru. Sendang Biru is about 70 km away to the south from Malang at Tambakrejo village, Sumbermanjing Wetan district.

Wonosari Tea Plantation Wonosari tea plantation is the oldest tea plantation in East Java that was utilized as agro tourism. The idea from this kind of plantation started in 1998, as the application of Kaliklatak Plantation try out in Banyuwangi. Wonosari tea plantation is located 30 KM north of Malang, precisely in Lawang District that lies on the foot of Mt Arjuno. It is easy to be accessed, either by private car or even public transport.
